What is Alfa Romeo's History in the USA

What is Alfa Romeo's History in the USA?

For more than 105 years, Alfa Romeo has made automobiles for those that enjoy the finest in Italian style and world-class performance. Today, Alfa Romeo creates cars that embody the spirit of "La meccanica delle emozioni, " (the mechanics of emotion) in a way that no other brand on the market can match. In this article, we will look at the history of Alfa Romeo cars in the United States.

What vehicles preceded the importing of Alfa Romeos into the United States?

Back in the early 1940s, Alfa Romeo was a major manufacturer of automobiles that were enjoyed throughout Europe. This all came to a halt when World War II began when the company switched over to the manufacturing of war machinery. The Alfa Romeo company was extremely busy after this, as was virtually every other Italian manufacturing facility. It all came to an end in 1944, though, when three separate Allied bombing raids destroyed all the company's factories in Portello, Italy.

Once World War II was over and peacetime affairs began, Alfa Romeo forged ahead and rebuilt its factories, renewed its infrastructure, and began producing cars. By 1947, its very popular pre-war car, the 6C 2300, was updated and released as the 6C 2500. Post-war sales of this model were brisk and soon new models and new automotive technologies were in the works.

In particular, in 1954, the company released the Giulietta to considerable fanfare. It was a thoroughly modern looking car and was available in 4-door saloon/sedan, coupé and spider models. The Giulietta soon became a fan favorite of the Italian people and entrepreneurs began to import Alfas Romeos around the world.

When were Alfas imported into the United States?

Alfa Romeo automobiles were imported to the United States by Max Hoffman from the mid-1950s. The Giulietta Spider was the first automobile that he brought to the US. In 1961, this changed when Alfa Romeo started exporting cars to the United States through its own dealer network.

One of these early importers was Alfredo Gulla who had emigrated from Italy to the United States as a young man. In 1961, he established Alfredo's Foreign Cars and was one of the first Alfa Romeo, FIAT and ABARTH dealers in the country. Today, the Alfa Romeo portion of his business is known as Alfa Romeo FIAT of Larchmont.

What model came after Giulietta?

At the start of the 1970's, Alfa Romeo launched the Alfasud. The Alfasud (Type 901, 902 and 904) was a small family car that was manufactured from 1971 to 1989. This front-wheel-drive hatchback signaled the arrival of the modern-day Alfa Romeo - a practical, yet sophisticated, everyday car. The second-generation Giulietta was introduced in 1977, and the Alfetta 2000 TD in 1979, as well as the torpedo-shaped saloons of the 1980s, including the 33, the 75 and the 164.

As the millenium arrived, Alfa Romeo updated its model range with cars that sported cutting edge design and world-class performance. The Alfa Romeo 937 GT coupe automobile, produced between 2003 and 2010, was voted in 2004 as the world's most beautiful coupe in the annual L'Automobile più Bella del Mondo awards.

And what about today?

In 1995, Alfa Romeo decided to leave the North American marketplace due to the economics of adapting models to US specifications. They returned in 2008 with a major advertising campaign during Super Bowl 51 which featured 3 commericals of the new Giulia sport sedan in Quadrifoglio trim.

For the 2021 model year, the following Alfa Romeo automobiles are in the lineup:

Stelvio:  This popular compact SUV is presented in six trims. All are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and either a rear- or an all-wheel-drive.

Giulia:  With its 2020 redesign, this compact sedan's looks are complemented with an avant-garde and high-quality cabin. It shares the powertrain and underpinnings of its SUV counterpart, the Stelvio, differentiated only by its five-trim lineup, and slightly lower starting price.

Quadrifoglio:  Both the sedan and the sport utility vehicles are offered in specialized high-performance versions of the Quadrifoglio with 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engines for 2021.

4C Spider:  With 237 horsepower at the helm, this Italian sports car offers a carbon fiber monocoque lightweight chassis and stripped interior for the performance set. With a 1.75-liter turbo-four, it jumps from 0 to 60 mph in an exhilarating 4.1 seconds yet offers excellent gas mileage with EPA-estimated figures of 24/34/28 mpg.

GTA:  Scheduled to debut for the 2021 production year, this super sedan will offer high-output V6 engines, improved aerodynamics, and extreme weight-saving measures. The ultra-limited edition includes an bold front-splitter, side skirtings, and a custom rear-end spoiler.

Tonale:  For 2021, Alfa Romeo plans to introduce its entry-level offering for the sub-compact luxury crossover segment. It brings appeal with a 1.3L gasoline engine coupled to an electric boost system.
