The GTA Name

The GTA initials stand for Gran Turismo Alleggerita with alleggerita being "lightened" in Italian. The Giulia Sprint GTA was the origin of this acronym, which was designed as a sports car and presented at the Amsterdam Motor Show in the same year. The Giulia Sprint GT was replaced by an identical aluminum version that resulted in a 1,642 lb weight compared to the heavier road version. The 1.6 win cam engine with dual ignition reached an impressive 115 horsepower output. Autodelta technicians on the Alfa Romeo racing team used this as a reference vehicle, developing a powertrain with a maximum output of 170 horsepower! The success of this model was immediate, especially in competitions. It on national championships, individual races, and three consecutive "Challenge Europeo Marche." The GTA was so impressive that it claimed: "A victory a day in your everyday car." Today, the GTA is the undisputed icon of Alfa Romeo's sportiness, and the acronym GTA is associated with all sporty Alfa Romeo vehicles in general!

Technical Style and Modern Features

For its 110th anniversary, Alfa Romeo engineers have striven to improve the handling and aerodynamics of the 2020 Giulia GTA while also reducing the overall weight of the vehicle, just like the groundbreaking 1965 version. Engineers studied the active aerodynamics to increase the downforce thanks to technical know-how from Formula 1 and the synergy with Sauber Engineering. The 2020 version also uses Sauber Aerokit, side skirts, rear spoiler, and active front splitter for more aerodynamics. The central exhaust system is a titanium Akrapovic, which is integrated in the carbon fiber rear diffuser, a new addition to this model. Also new are the 20-inch center-lock wheels, the first in the sedan segment. High-speed handling has also improved with widened front and rear wheel tracks (a 50mm increase), a new set of springs, bushings for the suspension, and shock absorbers. The GTA modified (GTAm) variant is a street-legal version with two racing seats, 6-point safety belts, and roll bar. This version also has an aerodynamic front piece for balance at high speeds. Performance is powered by a 2.9 V6 Bi-Tubo aluminum engine that produces 505 horsepower in the standard model and up to 540 horsepower on the GTA.
Inside the car, Alfa Romeo has included several new details, including an Alcantara trim on the dashboard, side pillars, door panels, and glove compartment and also the central trim on the seats. On the GTAm variant, the Alcantara is more extensive and adds a fully upholstered basin in place of a rear bench. This allows more space for the specific moldings for helmets and fire extinguishers. The interior also features new matte carbon inserts with a distinctive aesthetic elegance. The new GTAm interior uniquely features no door panels or rear seats, and the door is opened with a belt, another shoutout to its racing heritage.

Lightweight and Powerful

With a total weight reduction of 220 lbs, the Alfa Romeo engineers have ensured extraordinary performance with meticulous effort. The GTA is made with lightweight carbon fiber in the driveshaft, roof, front bumper, wheel arches, and hood. In the GTAm, the carbon fiber is found in the shell of the sporting seats. Lightweight aluminum is used in the engine, suspension systems, and doors. A variety of other composite materials are also used, including Lexan, a polycarbonate resin, which is used in the rear and side window frames. The impressive results include a weight set of 3,350 lbs, which brings the weight/power ratio to 6.2 lb/hp thanks to the increased 540 horsepower. The Giulia GTA and GTAm are capable of an acceleration of 0 to 62 mph at an incredible 3.6 seconds! The two-seater GTAm is road approved with a larger visible rear wing and front splitter. The four-seat option has no spoiler, splitter, or rear roll-bar, which is optimal for daily use on the road, making the Giulia GTA an everyday supercar.
