Famous Alfa Romeo Race Cars
Brought to you by Alfa Romeo Larchmont
Since its founding in Milan, Italy, in 1910, Alfa Romeo has designed and crafted some of the most stylish and exclusive cars in automotive history. And, since the early days, Alfa Romeo has also created some of winningest race cars in the world. Let's take a look at a few of the finest examples of Alfa Romeo race cars through the years.Â
The Alfa Romeo 24HP
The A.L.F.A. 24 hp model designed by Giuseppe Merosi was Alfa Romeo's first automobile. During the first ten years of the company's life, the company was called A.L.F.A., standing for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. The vehicle was assembled in the Portello district of Milan and was powered by a 4.1-liter engine. On 14 May 1911 the 24 HP made its racing debut at the 6th Targo Floria race. A pair of special 24 HP cars were built for the occasion, with 2-seat bodywork, an additional 30-litre fuel tank behind the seats, two spare tires.

The P2 was the first creation of Alfa's new designer Vittorio Jano who had been recruited from Fiat by Enzo Ferrari. The P2 was powered by Alfa's first inline-8 cylinder supercharged engine with 2 carburetors placed after the compressor.

The Alfa Romeo 6C
The Alfa Romeo 6C name was used on road, race, and sports cars produced between 1927 and 1954. The "6C" name refers to the six cylinders of the car's inline 6 cylinder engine. Bodies for these cars were made by many coachbuilders but beginning in 1933 there was also a 6C version with an Alfa factory body, built in Portello. The more powerful 6C 1750 was introduced in 1929 in Rome. The car had a top speed of 95 mph, a chassis designed to flex and undulate over uneven surfaces, as well as sensitive geared-up steering. In 1929, the 6C won every major racing event in which it was entered, including the Grands Prix of Belgium, Spain, Tunis and Monza, and the Mille Miglia.

The Alfa Romeo 750 Competizione
The 750 Competizione was a traditional, open two-seater sportscar with right-hand drive, but with a partition running down the middle of the cockpit, between the driver and passenger seats. Each occupant had separate plexiglass windshields connected to small side windows. Under the small left-hand door was an openable bay containing a pair of four-to-two exhaust mufflers. At the rear, two fins led to the small rear lights, while another fin higher up merged into the driver's headrest.

The Alfa Romeo Giuietta 750
In 1955 the Giulietta twin-cam engine formed the basis for a barchetta-style sportscar designed to enter competitions in the 1500 cc Sports class. Abarth was tasked with tuning the engine and created the sheet metal chassis. The twin-cam engine adopted a dual ignition cylinder head, which increased power output to 145 hp at over 8000 rpm. For the mid-50's the Giulietta was technically advanced. The engine was constructed out of aluminum alloy and the gearbox and differential casing made from the same material. The suspension was independent at the front with unequal-length A-arms, coil springs and an anti-roll bar; at the rear there was a well located live axle with single lower trailing arms and coil springs. The Giulietta was marketed as the "family car that wins races" by beating off competition in the touring category.
