Highway Driving Tips

Brought to you by Alfa Romeo of Larchmont

Driving on the highway is an essential part of life as it can help you get to where you're going quicker and easier. When you start out, driving on the highway can be a little bit intimidating; once you get the hang of it, things can become pretty simple. Though even if you are an experienced driver, driving on the highway can still have its challenges. That's why we here at Afla Romeo of Larchmont have compiled some tips that you can use when you have to hit the turnpike. Of course, before you head out on the interstate, you're going to want to make sure that your vehicle is highway ready by heading down to our dealership and having our amazing technicians go over every inch of your vehicle to make sure it's in working order!

Pick a Good Time

While sometimes this might be unavoidable, it's best to hit the turnpike when it's not crowded. Weekends and evenings are normally the best times, especially if it's after rush hour. It's also a good idea to pay attention to the traffic reports in the area, so you're not caught in traffic at inopportune times. You also need to make sure that you know where you are going to plan by accounting for the traffic. If there will be a ton of traffic on the highway, you might want to leave a little earlier so you can try to avoid it.

Avoid being on the highway in adverse conditions

Try to avoid driving on the turnpike in bad situations such as bad weather. Things like rain, snow, fog, or slippery and icy roads can severely impact your driving. You also might want to avoid driving when there is a possibility for impaired drivers, such as on holidays or Saturday nights. If there is no choice and you must travel on the freeway, slow down to a safe speed to the flow of traffic and make sure you leave a lot of space between your vehicle and the car in front of you. Continue looking ahead for traffic slowing and stopping, so you allow yourself enough time to stop. You might also need to cover your brakes while traffic is congested.

Stay in a safe lane at a good speed

Ensure that you're driving your vehicle at a safe speed according to the speed limit, the flow of traffic, and weather and road conditions. Be sure that you never drive faster or slower than the flow of traffic. When you get on the freeway, know that the far left lanes are used for faster traffic while the far-right lanes are for slower traffic. Be sure that you pick a suitable lane for your driving speed and don't venture outside of it. It's also worth noting that the very right lane should only be used for entering and exiting the freeway, while the very left lane should be used for passing. So try not to travel in these lanes unless it's necessary. We recommend staying in the middle lane.

Leave tons of room

Don't tailgate! Make sure that your vehicle is at a safe distance from the car in front of you as well as the vehicles to your left and right. Seeing as how you're traveling at a faster speed, you're going to want to give yourself enough time to react to any potential traffic hazard so you can stop before you slam into the car in front of you. You're also going to want to provide enough space for other vehicles to maneuver around you as needed.

Don't park on the shoulder

Try to avoid stopping on the pavement, shoulders, or ramps of any highway unless it's necessary. Sometimes emergencies are unavoidable. If your vehicle brakes down on the turnpike, be sure to switch on your hazard lights and pull over to the shoulder as quickly as possible and do so far away from any oncoming traffic. Once you are pulled over, be sure not to leave the car unless it's necessary.
